Deb’s Top Ten #9: End of Life Conversation

December 30th, 2012 by Deb Wilson

It came as no surprise to see improvements in families talking about the inevitable conclusion to life as part of the Wall Street Journal’s column on ways that patients received better treatment in 2012.  I have to agree that innovations that facilitate the important conversation about how we want to be treated during the final phase of our life deserve recognition in my 2012 Top 10 series.  I will take any opportunity I can to remind and encourage individuals to plan in advance so that their caregivers will know how to respond.

One of the earlier innovations, the POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) that I profiled in 2010,

POLST: Increasing the Odds

has continued to grow with more states adopting the approach.   The Conversation Project (referenced in the Wall Street Journal article) is another tool that is available to help with the “talk”.
